Frequently Asked Questions

What is functional nutrition?
Functional nutrition is a personalized, evidence-based approach that looks beyond symptoms to identify the root causes of your health concerns. Together, we use your health history, symptom tracking, and lab testing to develop a targeted, real-food nutrition plan designed for lasting relief and vitality.   As with any nutrition professional, we are unable to diagnosis medical conditions.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, insurance is accepted for nutrition counseling services. Coverage varies by plan, and benefits can be verified prior to your appointment. Kate Dwyer Nutrition is in-network with BCBS, Aetna, UHC, and Medcost.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to use my insurance?
It depends on your insurance plan. Some require a referral, while many allow you to self-refer for nutrition counseling. I accept BCBS, Aetna, United Healthcare, and Medcost.  I suggest using the Insurance Benefit Script from the Forms page to verify benefits.

What kinds of symptoms or conditions can nutrition counseling help with?
Nutrition counseling can support relief from perimenopause symptoms like bloating, brain fog, poor sleep, and weight changes. It also helps manage autoimmune conditions, metabolic health, gut issues, and more by addressing root causes through diet and lifestyle adjustments.

How long does it take to see results?

Many clients begin to notice improvements in energy, sleep, and cravings within a few weeks. More complex concerns like weight changes and hormone-related symptoms may take longer depending on individual factors.

What happens in a typical session?
Your initial session is a deep dive into your health history, symptoms, and goals—typically 60 minutes. We review any lab results you have or decide on advanced lab testing if needed. We discuss the best ways to support your goals with diet, lifestyle, and supplement recommendations.  Follow-ups focus on reviewing progress, adjusting your plan, and ongoing support.

Are supplements part of the plan?
Supplements may be recommended only when needed to address specific deficiencies or support healing. The emphasis is always on food first—building strong foundations with diet and lifestyle before adding any supplements.

How do telehealth sessions work?
All sessions are conducted securely online, allowing you to access expert care from the comfort of your home. You’ll receive personalized guidance, easy-to-follow plans, and all session notes via email.

How can I get started?
The first step is to schedule your initial session. Most insurance plans cover nutrition counseling as a preventive benefit with low or no co-pays. I’ll guide you through insurance verification and what to expect so you can focus entirely on your health.

Do you serve clients outside of Asheville?

Yes, virtual services allow clients across North Carolina, Arizona, California, Colorado, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia to receive individualized nutrition support.

Can nutrition help with perimenopause anxiety or mood swings?

Yes, nutrition plays a major role in mood regulation. Stable blood sugar, adequate protein, and key nutrients like magnesium, zinc, folate, choline, and omega-3 fats can help reduce anxiety and improve emotional stability.

How do I reduce inflammation during perimenopause?

Reducing inflammation involves prioritizing whole, minimally processed foods, healthy fats, and adequate fiber intake. Limiting added sugars, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods can also help lower inflammation.
